Yesterday we arrived in York just in time for yet another drizzle, but today the weather was fine. We kept busy all day long. We were able to walk the entire length of the ancient city wall, most of which is still standing strong. There were points along the wall where the boys could do rubbings, and after finding all the points they have pieced together a map of the ancient city.

We visited the York Castle Museum which gave an idea of what old York would have been like a few hundred years ago. We also went to the Jorvik museum, which focuses on the even older Viking controlled city which they named Jorvik(pronounced Yorvik, later changed to York). The second museum was a little hokey, but was created from a five year long excavation of the site of the museum back in the late 70s, where they uncovered loads of archaeological finds from the time that the Vikings controlled the area.
We ate an early meal and returned to play board games back at our bed and breakfast. It was nice to slow it down after a busy day. Tomorrow we are off on the motorway again, this time to Bath.

Today we went on the wall again and found all the stations for rubbings. Then we went to the York Castle Museum. It was really fun. Then we had lunch. Then we went to the Jorvick Viking Museum. That was my favorite-it was like a fun history ride. I bought a rune ring. On the street there was a man who had painted all of himself purple and had made his clothes stick in a certain position so that he looked like it was very windy. He would hold still so that he would look like a statue.

I'm guessing that the boys like having their picture taken by artillery. There have been a few of those. I think we need more pictures of Margaret, though! We miss you guys and we're glad you're having fun.
ReplyDeleteWhy do I like this last photo so much? Hmmmm...I can't imagine :-) But why won't it enlarge like the others when I click on it? :-(
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree...you need more photos with everyone in them...most people (natives and fellow tourists alike) love feeling helpful when you ask them to take a picture of you with your camera...try it!
